What is the Metis Economic Development Fund?

The objective of the Metis Economic Development Fund (MEDF) is to promote the economic development, skills, and financial opportunities of the Manitoba Metis.

MEDF stimulates the economic development of Manitoba Metis businesses and entrepreneurs by providing equity and/or debt financing, creating equity partnerships. MEDF concentrates on businesses and entrepreneurs which are in growth, expansion, or acquisition phases. The Fund may also invest in start-up ventures when the viability of the business outweighs the increased investment risk.

What is the difference between Investing and Debt Financing?

In order to expand, it's necessary for business owners to tap financial resources. Business owners can utilize a variety of financing resources, initially broken into two categories, debt and equity. "Debt" involves borrowing money to be repaid, plus interest, while "equity" involves raising money by selling shares in the company.

Equity investing advantages

You share the risks and liabilities of company ownership with MEDF as a partner.

Since you don't have to make debt payments, you can use the cash flow generated to further grow the company or to diversify into other areas.

Maintaining a low debt-to-equity ratio also puts you in a better position to get a loan in the future when needed.

MEDF is also a short term partner and look at exiting the business within 3- 7 years of investing.

Great option if you cannot afford to take on more debt.

Debt financing advantages

You do not relinquish any ownership.

The interest on the loan is tax deductible.

Fast turnaround (four to six weeks).

Who is eligible?

The Fund is available to all Metis owned and controlled enterprises incorporated in Manitoba. Applicants need to demonstrate their Metis Heritage via genealogy, new Metis Citizenship card or Metis Harvester card.

What distinguishes MEDF from other financial institutions such as banks and credits unions?

MEDF is a non-profit organization and only seeks to maintain its loan capital base. Our goal is not profit, but to positively impact the Metis economy by supporting Metis owned and controlled businesses.
